Recreation in Southern Utah

Here at WillowWind, you can find yourself close to many of the beautiful monuments that exist in this part of the country. WillowWind is located in the town of Hurricane, Utah which is only a short distance from popular attractions like Zion National Park. While staying at WillowWind, you are also only a quick day trip away from the beauty of the Grand Canyon, Duck Creek, and Brianhead Mountain ski resort. There are so many recreational activities to do in the area. Here are some of our guests’ favorites:

Fishing

There are many areas near WillowWind just ripe for fishing — here you can fish for bass, bluegill, catfish, trout, and walleye found just within a few miles. Quail Creek Reservoir (also called Quail Lake) is one of Utah’s best-known bass fisheries and has continued to have great fishing since 1985 when it was impounded. Quail Creek Reservoir is just 8 miles away from WillowWind and 10 miles Northeast of St. George which is just off of Interstate Highway 15. It is a large reservoir stretching 590 acres and is 185 feet full. At this depth, you can find rainbow trout year-round! A State Park boat ramp and campground are available. The park entrance fee is $10 per vehicle.

Sand Hollow Reservoir is located just a little south of Quail Lake. Public access to the reservoir is available only through the state park at $7 per vehicle. While at His Way Fishing you’re given all the tools you need to have a wonderful time on the water. You will be provided with a boat, rods, reels, tackles, and everything else you need! These and many other options exist for great fishing near WillowWind.

Golfing

Southern Utah has some of the most beautiful golf courses in the Southwest, where you can truly soak up all of the natural elements. The climate in St. George and Hurricane is wonderful for golfers looking to escape to warmer weather in the winter, but also provides a nice escape from the intense desert heat in the summer months. Some favorite courses include Sand Hollow, Copper Rock, and Sky Mountain. Boating

You can explore Sand Hollow State Park and Quail Lake by boat! By renting from the Southern Utah Adventure Center you can take the boat or jet skis yourself — they come loaded on a trailer and ready to go, or you can have them delivered for a fee. You can explore Sand Hollow State Park or Quail Lake by boat, jet ski, or kayak after you get your rental.

Hiking

There are many amazing trails in Hurricane and St. George. Here’s a small list:

Mountain Biking

At Over the Edge Sports, a mountain bike rental facility in Hurricane, you can rent or purchase mountain bikes ready to ride the Gooseberry Mesa, the J.E.M. Trail, and the Little Creek Mountain trails. Bryce Canyon, with Red Canyon’s Thunder Mountain Trail, and Brian Head Mountain Bike Park are also just a short drive away. Many miles of surrounding singletrack make Hurricane a year-round world mountain bike destination.

Jeep Tours

Zion Outback Safaris will take you on a Jeep tour around Zion National Park. Their mission is to “take the road less traveled to show you parts of Zion that most visitors see only in photographs, including stunning panoramas and breathtaking overlooks that have remained unchanged for a million years.” Here you may see thousand-year-old art carved into rocks by native peoples, authentic ghost towns, and potentially different types of wildlife. The jeep tours from Zion Outback Safaris are one of a kind.

Helicopter Tours

Seeing Zion National Park from the ground is breathtaking, so imagine seeing the park from a helicopter’s eye view! To do just that you can book a helicopter tour with Zion Helicopters. At Zion Helicopters they fly the Robinson R-44 Raven Helicopter, a four-seat helicopter with one of the best safety records in the industry. Every passenger has their own window so each person can take in the beauty from the sky.

ATV Rentals

At the Southern Utah Adventure Center, as mentioned above, Jeep, ATV, Personal Watercraft, Service & Parts, and Trail Guiding services are all offered here. Their guides are highly experienced and understand the need for safety first in these activities. They have tons of package deals for you to choose from that can accommodate riders of any skill level. There are also plenty of opportunities for side-by-side riding throughout the off-road trails.

Horseback Riding

At Jacobs Ranch riders of all ages are welcome to take a stroll down the Zion Canyon Trail Head. You will have a unique experience aimed at preserving the Western culture. The full moon cycle trips are offered to experience the beauty of the trail at night. Here you’re guaranteed to see some incredible scenery.

Skydiving

Southern Utah now offers the spectacular experience of skydiving, this also provides an aerial view of the canyons of Zion National Park! Today’s skydivers find soft standup landings are an easy accomplishment with rectangular parachutes. You can get to the speed of 120 mph by sky diving through this beautiful part of the country.

Zip Lining & Rock Climbing

Paragon Adventures creates programming that presents a variety of many different vertical activities. Depending on the program these may consist of combinations of rock climbing, rappelling, zip lines, or slot canyons. Regardless, you will find yourself enjoying the sensation of gliding through the air that these programs make possible.

Trap Shooting

Purgatory Clay Sports is one of the top shotgun venues in the west. Their club is fully run by volunteers and operates 2 Sporting Clay Trails, 5 Stand, 4 Trap Fields, and 2 Skeet Fields. They are a public club, which means members give so that prices can stay affordable. All levels are welcome to this “Diamond in the Desert.”
